What’s a good meal without a proudly South African vegetable relish? For as long as I can remember we would have chakalaka at every braai. My mom is the master of this relish in our family but as I grew older I took over from her and maybe tweaked it abit but it still tastes just as good:)


Canola oil

4 Carrots, grated

4 Tomatoes, grated

1 Onion, chopped

1/2 Green pepper, chopped

1/2 Red pepper, chopped

1 Tin Baked beans

5ml/ 1 tsp Curry powder

5ml/ 1 tsp Chilli 

10 ml/ 1 tbsp Mother in law spice

5 ml/ 1 tsp Cumin

5 ml/ 1 tsp Tumeric 

5 ml/ 1 tsp Garlic, crushed

2 Tbsp Tomato paste

2 Tbsp Chutney

Salt & pepper


1. Heat the oil in a pan.

2. Add the onion, garlic and green peppers and fry until soft with spices.

3.Add the grated tomatoes and carrots and mix well, then add the baked beans.

4.Allow the mixture to cook for 15 minutes on medium heat.

5.Stir the mixture every 5 minutes and finish with tomato paste and chutney.

Add salt for taste.
